THE LEG

An opportunistic amputee and a small-time hustler become locked in a bitter, increasingly public rivalry over the ownership of a severed human leg discovered in a smoker grill.

Set in rural North Carolina, The Leg is a narrative feature film that follows two individuals. We meet John Wood, a once-promising local “golden boy”, struggling with trauma, addiction, and the aftermath of a plane crash that took both his father and his leg. His nemesis is one Shannon Whisnant, a self-made showman who sees the bizarre discovery not as a tragedy, but as his long-awaited shot at relevance. What begins as a legal dispute quickly spirals into a media circus, with both men digging in as the line between truth and performance begins to blur.

When Shannon wins the storage unit containing John’s leg, he initially turns it over to authorities, only to realize the attention it brings. As John attempts to reclaim what he sees as rightfully his (a literal piece of himself), Shannon reverses course, asserting ownership and inserting himself into the story. What follows is a bizarre custody battle that quickly spills beyond the courtroom and into the public eye, fueled by local news, opportunistic media coverage, and the growing spectacle surrounding both men.

As the feud escalates, Shannon leans into the spotlight, building a persona around the leg and chasing notoriety through appearances, merchandise, and increasingly outrageous schemes. John, meanwhile, is pulled deeper into a fight he cannot afford to lose, financially, emotionally, or psychologically. His attempt to regain control of his life becomes inseparable from reclaiming the leg, even as his own instability threatens to undermine him. Each confrontation raises the stakes, drawing in family, the community, and anyone looking to profit from the chaos.

Beneath the absurd headlines is a grounded, character-driven story about two men shaped by the same forces. Fathers who defined them. Addictions that haunt them. And the unsettling possibility that the person they’re fighting may be the only one who truly understands them. As the story progresses,  the leg becomes less a prize and more a mirror, forcing each man to confront who they are, who they were supposed to be, and where their choices ultimately lead them.

Tonally, The Leg lives in the space between prestige dark comedy and grounded Americana. At its core, it is a story about ego, identity, and the strange things people cling to when they feel they have nothing left.
